History

The history of the town dates back to the 12th century BC. In the 4th-2nd century BC, the Thracians built the first fortified settlement, which still stands as the now 3200 years' SHUMEN FORT.

During the First Bulgarian Kingdom 681-1018, two of the old capitals of BULGARIA - PLISKA and VELIKI PRESLAV - were erected on the territory of today's Shumen region. To commemorate this glorious past, in 1981, a memorial complex was built over the city in honor of the 1300th anniversary of the founding of the Bulgarian State.

Culture

The rich cultural heritage of the town of Shumen makes it an extremely popular tourist destination. The city is the birthplace of the first Bulgarian playwright, the first orchestra, the performing of the first operetta and is one of the few cities in the world to have its own unique anthem.

The town of Shumen is one of the most important administrative, economic and cultural centers of our country. In 1882, the first brewery in Bulgaria was created. Since then, SHUMEN BEER (Shumensko Pivo) continues to be among the leaders in the market. We, as the organizers of BG-O-FEST, are especially happy that SHUMEN BEER has been our partner for a number of years and supports our sport.
